It is with deep sorrow we announced that Dr. Chandrakant Sardeshmukh left the world in a tragic road accident in Pune, India on the early morning of August 15th, 2011.
When he first visited Japan in 1991, Indian music and culture awareness was much less as compared to today. So as a traditional Indian musician from the lineage of Pandit Ravi Shankar and Maa Annapurnadevi, he took up the challenge of promoting a friendly relationship between India and Japan through his activities related to music. He performed many Sitar concerts and musical collaborations with Japanese musicians, sessions for healing music, teaching Sitar and mantra chanting for individual and groups, lecture demonstrations for school children as well as adults and so on.
For over 20 years he had been performing the sitar all over Japan in small villages as well as major cities. He was not restricted to major auditoriums but also performed happily in many venues including primary and junior high schools, local communities, and Japanese temples. This resulted in deepening the mutual understanding between Japan and India. We are very grateful that the Indian Embassy along with many Japanese supported him in his mission which he could continue for so long.
He was very happy about being recognized as a performing artist by the Government of Japan through his artist visa many years back, and a permanent residence as an artist recently.
Through his music therapy he promoted his motto to make us happy and healthy all the time. He was a jolly person; made many of us laugh and shared happiness easily. He touched many lives and so many of them tell us beautiful stories of him till now. His enthusiastic and warm presence is still fresh in our minds.
彼の演奏は、とにかく、素晴らしかった。音楽によって癒されるとは、こういうことなのかと、初めて感じました。
